Pamela Z in Times x Times x Times

by Beverly Brooks

One of New York’s new music and theater festivals, Prototype, after an overhaul by the pandemic goes online this weekend.  I am proud that my sister, composer/performer Pamela Z, is featured in the festival lineup with the world premiere of a site-specific sonic experience she created with theater-artist Geoff Sobelle titled Times3 (Times X Times X Times).

Times3, composed by Z and written by Sobelle, is a sonic journey through Time Square – past, present, and future. You will hear instrumentalists including Tom Dambly – Trumpet, Todd Reynolds – Violin, Crystal Pascucci – Cello, and sampled voices from historians, an architect, an urban planner, a sociologist, and artists, including Z and Sobelle.

Pamela Z is a composer, vocalist, and installation and multimedia artist. She uses her classically trained bel canto voice along with real-time electronic processing, sampled sounds, wireless gesture activated MIDI controllers and interactive video to create complex sonic layered pieces. She has performed internationally in large scale solo pieces in the US, Canada, Europe, and Japan, and continues to receive commissions to compose live and fixed-media scores for choreographers, film/video artists, chamber music and dance scores, and dramatic pieces.

In the collaboration, “Times3,” alternately titled “Times x Times x Times.” Z teams up with theater artist Geoff Sobelle on a half-hour streaming art piece, a soundscape meditation on Time Square, past, present and future.

Sobelle  started out as a magician, and later became an actor who challenges the traditional with absurdist performance. He is co-artistic director of rainpan 43, his company that creates improvisational works that are as Sobelle says “poetic pieces that look for humanity where you least expect it and find grace where no one is looking.” I say he is still a magician.

You can see samples of Z's and Sobelle's work below.
